Many removal and storage companies store their customer’s items in wooden crates. These are then stacked in a warehouse with lots of other crates. In order to access a crate, many others have to be moved. In such cases the customer is often charged an expensive fee every time they want to get something from storage. Customers should check these charges and consider how often they intend to access their storage. If regular access is needed these cost will soon add up.

Most self storage facilities only cater for the storage of your belongings. That leaves you with the task of arranging transport to and from the facility for your items. Many opt to hire a van and to do the move themselves. Given the costs of hiring a van, paying for insurance and the fuel costs, you will save a lot of money if the storage operator provides a free or discounted van. Investigate what is offered as part of your decision making process.

Self storage suppliers require payment in advance. This is usually for at least 4 weeks, but can be longer. When it is time for you to move out it is very common for the company to owe you money for the days that you have not used. Some suppliers will refund this money to you. Others will not give you a refund which means that you can lose quite a lot of money. Always check that your chosen supplier will refund you for any unused days.

Many storage companies know that a lot of their customers are price sensitive and will shop around for the cheapest quote. In order to give a prospective customer the lowest possible price some will quote costs excluding taxes, such as VAT. It is only when the customer is moving in that this extra charge is applied. By then it is often too late for the customer to find an alternative supplier. Be sure to check the full costs in advance of your move.

The quality and motivation of self storage employees varies from company to company. Well trained staff will go out of their way to suggest how you can use your space in the most efficient manner. This means that your belongings will fit into a small unit, saving you from paying for a more expensive larger one. As these saving soon add up, be sure to check how helpful the staff are when you enquire about storage.

Most self storage buildings are very secure, with sophisticated alarms, CCTV systems and good fire protection. However, accidents do happen, so it is important that your belongings are protected. You can get insurance from your storage provider, but it is worth checking with your own insurer. Their policy may cover your items when they are in storage. This will save you the cost of paying an extra premium.

Many self storage units offer discounts to customers who pay for long periods in advance. The minimum period is usually 6 months. Further reductions will be made to those customers who are willing to pay for 12 months in advance. Investigate this option if you know that you will need long-term storage. You will make big savings.
