When families grow, people need more room in their houses. Rather than move to a bigger house, you can take advantage of the unused space in your basement. This means you will have to either clean it out our in some cases, finish the basement so that it is a room that can be used for more than storage.

It could be a bit costly to make all the renovations that are necessary to remodel your basement into a livable room. However, it will undoubtedly be cheaper than attempting to add space upstairs by knocking down walls and also cheaper than moving houses. Yet, if you really need the room, it can be a good investment.

If you have a good idea, you can probably turn your basement into almost any kind of room. Most choose to use their new basement space for things like a family room, game room, or office in order to free up room upstairs. Should you decide to go ahead and finish your basement, you may encounter two problems: poor lighting and too little heat. These two things will have to be figured out before you can use your basement comfortably year round.

The basement is most likely the darkest room of the house because it might not have any windows to let natural light in. This means you have to put good lighting in so that the room can be used comfortably. Now, if you are going to use the basement for something like an in home theater room, perhaps the lighting is not too important. But should you want to use it for a library or workshop, the amount of light you need is of much greater importance.

Even in the summer months many basements remain cool or even cold. In the winter the basement of any house can be downright freezing. Since warm air rises, basement always tend to be the coldest room in the house. If you are thinking of turning your basement into a usable room, figuring out how to keep your basement warm year round is going to be one of your major problems.
