France and Germany have been linked to road transport, since the invention of the car. However, with the development of environmental issues like climate change and peak oil, road transport is undergoing a change. Sustainable road use is now being considered seriously by transport planners. As bicycle usage continues to grow, planners have to develop the infrastructure to support cyclists.
The French started manufacturing cars in the late nineteenth century, and have since developed an extensive road network. This has allowed car use to develop across the country. Germany also invented a car in the late nineteenth century, and has loved them ever since. With the advent of the autobahn, German drivers were able to drive further and faster, increasing their love of cars.
These days everyone has an environmental opinion, but in the sixties, when the environmental movement started, an environmentalist was a radical. As environmental issues start to impact on our daily lives, environmentalism moves into the main stream. Governments are now spending vast quantities of time and money in an attempt to alleviate the causes and effects of climate change. Unfortunately, governments can only do so much; real change comes from the people.
Despite a growing demand for oil, research has shown that oil reserves have already peaked and are starting to decline. To enable the public to have access to an oil supply; more risky oil drilling is being undertaken. However, when these hazardous ventures go wrong, enabling repairs and controlling the damage can be very difficult. The demand from society, for oil will reduce, when alternative transport and fuels are developed and used.
With green issues becoming more popular, some German and French cities are now encouraging bicycle use. Transport planners are now considering the bicycle when planning. Bicycle lanes are being built within city centers, to provide a safe and environmental alternative. To facilitate the use of bicycles for daily activities, extensive bicycle parking facilities are also being fitted. There are also low cost hire bike schemes running within cities, for short commutes across the city.
As the future beckons, consumers are being forced to reconsider their daily lives and the choices that are made. If people continue as they have been going, society will be faced with continued climate change and higher prices for all the goods which it needs.
When society switches to alternatives that are environmentally sustainable, the effects of climate change can be reduced. Road transport in France and Germany now includes bicycles, along with cars, trucks and buses.
