You may be wondering why you would want to buy Phoenix real estate by a mountain range named Superstition. It sounds creepy and mysterious. Let me explain to you what exactly the superstition is, and perhaps you will change your mind.
Ever heard of the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine? This may be the most famous lost gold mine in American history, and it is reportedly located in the Superstition Mountain Range. The legend of this Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine has many variations, and is very vague. As most legends to, of course, no one really knows exactly what happened. All version involve a man named Jacob Waltz and some versions involve a second man named Jacob Weiser, however, this may just be a mistranslation of Jacob Waltz, and really there is only one man. Jacob Waltz was a German immigrant, hence the use of the slang term “Dutchman”.
Somehow, Waltz locates a rich gold mine. One common version of the story is that he saved or aided the Peralta family, who rewarded Waltz by telling him the location of the mine. Waltz is attacked and wounded, either by Indians or by the greedy partner Weiser, but survives long enough to tell a Dr. Walker about the mine. He also may have drawn a very crude map of where the mine is before he died.
Many people through history have tried to locate the mine in the Superstition Mountains, but without success. There was one man who seemed to have a bit more of a lead than anyone else. His name was Adolf Ruth. Supposedly, his son, Edwin, received some antique maps from a man named Gonzalez, who claimed to be a descendant of the Peralta family. The maps were Edwin’s reward for some legal help he gave, and he passed them on to his father, Adolf. In 1931, Adolf decided to go looking for the treasure. He disappeared and no one knew where he went. His skull was found a year later, however, with two bullet holes in the head. A year after that, the rest of his remains were found scattered around the area.
If you are in to folklore and are interested in a little treasure hunt, you may be interested in some Phoenix real estate around the Superstition Mountains.
