If you are going to check out a new apartment and you are indeed, an adult, it never hurts to show up looking like one. Flip flops and cut-off shorts may not be the best look when you are trying to let someone know that you will make a good tenant. Even if its not fair to be judged by externals that is the world we leave in. Don’t undermine yourself.
It is usually helpful to bring your checkbook or some other valid form of payment with you. You never know if this just might be the place and if you like it a lot it is better to be well prepared. You don’t want to lose a great place because you weren’t prepared. This is also part of looking responsible.
Once you know you are moving it is never too early to start putting your finances in good order. Get caught up on bills, try to check your credit and start saving for a deposit and as much of the rent as you can. The last thing you want to worry about when you are in the middle of moving is running out of money.
It’s not a bad idea to have renter’s insurance. It is not expensive and it will be more expensive to replace all of your stuff than you probably think. At the very least you will have a little more piece of mind.
Make sure you actually read your lease. Not just a quick glance or skim through. Read the whole thing. You are putting your name behind those terms so know what it is you are actually signing. I’m amazed that anyone would not do this, but I think most don’t.
